Fashion Fever

"Fashion Fever" is the sixteenth episode of Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders. Its working title has been "Vogue". Its international titles include Catalan "La febre de la moda", German "Ärger mit Lady Kale" ("Trouble with Lady Kale"), French "Les Top-models" ("Top Models"), Italian "La febbre del fascino" (The Fever of Glamour/Spell"), Portuguese "A febre da moda", Russian "Погода за модой" ("Weather for Fashion"), Serbo-Croat "Modna groznica", and Spanish "Fiebre por la moda".

It is high fashion and high-jinx as a fashion show opens at the Crystal Palace's craft fair grounds for Queen Anya's birthday. King Jared wants to surprise Anya with a new dress and assigns Gwenevere and Sunstar to handle the 'secret mission', as the Princess manages to get Fallon, Moondance, Tamara and Tamara's baby animals involved in a comedy of errors as each girl and animal tries their best to complete the mission. Meanwhile, Gwen's evil aunt Lady Kale sneaks into the show to learn of the Jewel Riders' plans.

Plot summary[]

It is time for the annual charity fashion show craft fair, and Princess Gwenevere still can not decide which dress to wear. King Jared adds to Gwen's problems by asking her to fetch one of Queen Anya's dresses so the Grand Designer Antonio can design a new dress for her. But Gwen is too busy with organising the show, so she passes the task to Fallon. Unfortunately, Fallon gets caught in Anya's closet by the Queen herself and is sent peel potatoes.

Meanwhile, Queen Anya's evil sister Lady Kale arrives at New Camelot fair grounds and uses her magic to sneak into show under the guise of fashion designer "Madam LaPayne". She has her dweasel minions use a magic spinning wheel to create a dress for Gwenevere to model. This is all part of Morgana's plan to get her into the Jewel Keep and figure out the locations of all the Wizard Jewels. The dweasels create magic fabric, and Kale uses the Dark Stone to turn it into a wonderful dress, that she plans for Gwen to put on so she can be entranced into opening the access to the Jewel Keep.

Gwenevere indeed soon puts on the enchanted dress and then falls under her wicked aunt's control. Kale makes Gwen lead her through the Crystal Palace and past a guard into the Jewel Keep. There, Kale discovers that the Jewel Riders have mapped out areas of strong magic, most of which are wizard lairs, and sends Gwen away. Meanwhile, the magic wheel still works, making a magic blob that then chases after the dweasels.

At the show, Tamara with the unicorns Moondance, Sunstar and Cleo all do their turn. Then the still entranced Gwenevere comes to model her enchanted dress, which magically shape-shifts as disco music plays. Suddenly, the magic blob appears behind her and begins rampaging through the show tent. But the other Jewel Riders and Drake save the Princess and destroy the blob, stopping a small wild magic outbreak in New Camelot.

At this point Fallon and Drake realise that something fishy is going on, and so they leave Tamara to check on the Jewel Keep. There they find Kale, who has just finished copying the locations of strong magic. A standoff between them ensues as using magic within the Keep makes it go out of control, but the evil woman summons Gwenevere to cover for her escape. As the bewitched Princess attacks her friends with the Sun Stone, Fallon stays to fight off Gwen and free her from the magic dress, while Drake runs off after Kale.

While all this is going on, Antonio investigates Kale's room and falls under the spell of the spinning wheel. He starts making a massive dress. Elsewhere, the great wolves Goliath and Thunder track down the dweasels and start chasing them around the Palace.

Lady Kale is almost out of the Crystal Palace when Drake catches up with her. As the Dark Stone's power is diminished inside the Palace (the very center of good magic in Avalon), he seizes the opportunity to defeat the witch here and there. So Drake challenges her to a sword duel and attacks boldly, but soon it turns out she is way too skilful for him. Now in peril, Drake is then joined in the fight by Fallon, but Kale still manages to fence off both of them even after they create shields to aid them. Gwen arrives just in time to save her boyfriend from distress, swinging on a rope to carry him away from under a falling chandelier, while Kale victoriously walks outside to have her dragon Grimm come and get them out of there.

But then a total chaos ensues as Rufus and Twig hunted by the wolves, and Master Antonio with the magic wheel, all arrive at the scene and run towards Kale and send her tumbling down into a fireworks storage tent. The arrived Grimm can only watch as a massive explosion sends his evil mistress sky high (the script says "into the orbit") along with her dweasel goons and the wheel.

With the crisis over, Antonio, finally free of his enchantment, presents Queen Anya a weird magic dress he made for her using the wheel. Gwen and Fallon then use their jewels to morphs it into a beautiful costume.

Avalon: Web of Magic connections[]

Spellsinger follows the same plot as this episode, except there is a Kara / Adriane rivalry added, the bad guy wants to open a gateway to Avalon instead of finding the locations of Mineral McGuffins, and the events all revolve around a concert / singing contest instead of a fashion show.
Lyra could not hear Kara when she was mind-controlled in Spellsinger.
Most illustrations of the Dark Sorceress in the new edition seem to be based on Kale's dress in this episode.
Both Fallon and Adriane can create lassos with their jewels.
