Magic isn't for Everyone

In Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders, the magic is a common resource in the kingdom of Avalon, although it usually requires channelling from its raw form through magic jewels such as the Enchanted Jewels before it is of use. All magic comes from the dangerous void dimension known as the Wild Magic and also exists in many other worlds in various variants. Only the selected few are legally allowed or able to do it as chosen by the good wizard Merlin since his victory over the ancient wizards.

The special Crown Jewels and Wizard Jewels are keys to the control of the magic of Avalon and the Wild Magic, respectively, and now Merlin's students the Jewel Riders need to find them before their evil rivals to save Merlin and their kingdom. Various magic animals and assorted magic items can be also found in and outside Avalon, but the wild magic in its original unstable is very dangerous when unchecked. Not all types of magic are compatible, and different types come with different requirements. Some Jewels can also create a magic bond between a human and a magic animal, making them special friends for life through the Circle of Friendship ceremony.

The wild magic is a form of unrefined source of all the magic. When the wizard Merlin discovered Avalon, he saw it was crossed by a current of wild magic which, concentrating in certain places, had given rise to Enchanted Jewels, capable of transforming this wild magic in positive energy. Select young people with some affinity for magic and strong empathetic abilities can use Enchanted Jewels to bond with an animal partner. The strength and spirit of friendship is a powerful aid in turning wild magic to goodness. Magic, however, can be also turned and used for evil.

Wild Magic also actually qualifies as its own, perilous dimension that is accessible to various beings with either protection against or affinity for the place. The Jewel Riders can enter and ride the Wild Magic through the Travel Trees portals that lead to relatively safe magic tunnels. In their Jewel Quest, Princess Gwenevere (Starla), Fallon and Tamara need to find each of the seven lost Crown Jewels for the uncontrolled wild magic to stop leaking into Avalon.

Magic users[]

The girls with their magic jewels

Outside the Wild Magic, magic is divided in types and utilised by many groups and individuals. Anyone can tap into the wild magic at some mild level (for example bakers who sing baking songs produce better baked goods, weavers who sing weaving songs create better fabrics). Music is very important in the kingdom of Avalon, causing vibrations in the air that excites wild magic, allowing this magical energy to be used.

A very few, called wizards, have a natural ability to use powerful magic even without a jewel, as if they had wild magic running through their veins. The eternal wizards, such as the evil Morgana and the good Merlin, are the strongest beings to possess innate magic and do not need Jewels to control it (with their natural affinity to magic, they can use only their hands), but still need them to enter or exit the chaotic realm of Wild Magic. The danger of wild magic is that it is just that: wild and powerful. Its use at high level can affect the user, which is why Merlin designed the Enchanted Jewels to be used only by youngsters: Jewel Riders give up their jewels at adulthood, before the prolonged exposure to magic has a chance to harm them in any way.

A good part of magic in Avalon comes from the wielding of Enchanted Jewels, capable of focusing and channelling wild magic. Using "untuned" jewels without an authority was strictly forbidden by Merlin and banned under the laws of Avalon. Those who manage to tune powerful jewels to themselves have a good chance of holding their own even against wizards. This is exactly what happens when the rogue Princess of Avalon, Lady Kale, discovers the mysterious Dark Stone (later revealed as Morgana's own former Wizard Jewel created specially against Merlin) and uses her prior training under Merlin himself, making for a combination so dangerous that Kale stands out the first real threat to Avalon since the banishment of the ancient wizards. In fact, Kale's first accomplishment in her quest for power is sealing and banishing Merlin, the very wizard who once had removed all the other ones from Avalon.

Magic Tamara

A core principle of the magic presented by the Enchanted Jewels is that it is possible for people and magic animals to find each other and form a bond of lifetime friendship. This allows telepathic communication between the two holders. Their jewels' special powers can be activated by rhyming incantations. Some jewels are able to bind multiple parties, as in the case of Lady Tamara's Heart Stone. Princess Gwenevere's and Sunstar's Sun Stone is a very special Enchanted Jewel that traditionally is given to a future Queen of Avalon once she is selected by Merlin. The third main Enchanted Jewel currently in use is the Moon Stone, shared by Fallon and Moondance.

The three young Jewel Riders must master their jewels, the power of which manifests on them through their jewel armor, so they can take on the powerful Lady Kale and free Avalon of the threat of darkness. They are also aided by the boys of the Wolf Pack using their Forest Stones, as well as other magical allies. The existence of a special giant Enchanted Jewel is being kept secret by Merlin.

Lady Kale steals the Jewel Box from Merlin

The Crown Jewels are "heart and soul" of Avalon and each of them comes from a different geographic region of the kingdom. They cannot be used to channel wild magic, like the Enchanted Jewels, and work on a different scale, as they are tied into the fabric of the land itself—capable of controlling large areas of wild magic and turning it to goodness or to darkness.

The Crown Jewels are supposed to be kept in a magical setting inside the Jewel Box and would scatter and turn wild again if that magic is broken. Now, as the evil witch Lady Kale seeks the power of the Crown Jewels to rule Avalon, the Jewel Riders must find all the missing stones in their Jewel Quest to save Merlin and the kingdom itself.

Ian Morgana

Morgana asks Prince Ian to give up his Jewel in "Prince of the Forest"

The Wizard Jewels are magical magic jewels once each belonged to an ancient wizard. Now that these wizards are long gone, their jewels can usually be now found in their former lairs, protected by traps. The Wizard Jewels are also attracted to places of strong magic, not necessarily just in Avalon. Some have even meanwhile fallen in possession of those who are using them unknowingly, such as Ian.

This time, the future of not just the kingdom but the entire universe depends on the Jewel Riders and their friends. In their new quest, they must find the hidden Wizard Jewels before Kale and Morgana can do it. Once the Wizard Jewels are collected together, they could free Merlin from his Wild Magic prison. With the ultimate power of the One Jewel, either Merlin or his evil rivals might be able to rule all the magic for all time.

The Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders sequel comic, to be released in 2024, however hints a future where "the evil Wild Magic has returned to the kingdom--and so has a foe the Jewel Riders thought they'd once vanished." This presumably means either Kale or Morgana and despite Merlin's ownership of the One Jewel.

Magic beyond Avalon[]

Faery magic[]

Faery magic

Lady Kale trying to use faery magic

It is featured in "The Faery Princess" as the strange magic of the hidden realm of Faeryland, a peaceful kingdom of the tiny faeries. The faery magic works very differently than the magic of the outside world, based on elements (like water) and creating magical plants and creatures, and as such does not mix well with the Enchanted Jewels, and so the Jewel Riders are forced to improvise in the use of their Jewels to stop the evil Lady Kale from making herself the Queen of Faeryland and gaining control of its magic. The witch who had arrived first had some time to adjust to it, even creating a magic shark monster from her "Shark Stone", but the girls still manage to win with some help from Odeon's daughter and faery creatures.

Merfolk magic[]

Morgamaid

The "sea witch" Morgana

The unique mer-folk magic is introduced in the episode "Jewel of the Sea". It is based on the magical black pearls that need to harvested from a place guarded by a mysterious sea monster. At the end of the episode, the Jewel Riders receive a permanent ability to use their Enchanted Jewels to transform themselves into mermaids anytime, as well as to transform their unicorns into sea unicorns, which they then put to good use in their further adventures. In the final episode, Morgana also uses its power to briefly transform herself into a mermaid during an underwater fight for the ownership of the Jewel of the Sea.

The show's art director Greg Autore recalled: "The wild jewels would obviously enhance the magic of the current stones. The real trick was to make sure that new power fit the personality of the jewel and the character. Tamara's bubbly personality and colors made her the perfect choice to get the mermaid tail even though all three had it in the episode."[1]

Anti-magic[]

Anti-magic

Lady Kale with her anti-magic device in "Revenge of the Dark Stone"

The anti-magic is a creation of by Lady Kale featured in "Revenge of the Dark Stone" and "Full Circle". After taking over the Crystal Palace's Jewel Keep, Kale uses the Dark Stone on the Keep's jewel amplifier device (described as a sphere in the script), "like a surgical tool/welding tool as she fine tunes the device. Tuning noises emanate from the stones as they flash, sending out magical sparks. It sounds like she is tuning a radio. She is bathed in the shadows of evil light. Kale plugs in different jewels, arranging them in patterns, turning them like tubes. Magical sparks fly out as the sphere projects a floating diamond shaped jewel matrix."[2] Using the anti-magic device, Lady Kale drains the Jewel Riders' Enchanted Jewels completely out of power when they try to fight her. She then uses it to sends a beam of the anti-magic into the Wild Magic to destroy them and Merlin after they find him, but instead Merlin uses it that to at last free himself from Kale's magic-bubble prison, leading to a duel between them over his staff inside the Wild Magic.

Book of Magic Jewels[]

Book

Kale trying to flee with the book

The Book of Magic Jewels, or the "book of answers" as mysteriously described by Morgana, is an old tome about the Wizard Jewels that once had belonged to the ancient wizards. It is featured in "Morgana" when the newly revived Morgana convinces Lady Kale to return to the Hall of Wizards to retrieve it. The Jewel Riders manage to foil Kale and Morgana with the help of the Guardian when he turns against Morgana, and the book ends up accidentally destroyed by Kale in a struggle over it. However, the Guardian soon finds another book with just enough information the girls need to begin their search for the Wizard Jewels.

Kale's own magic items[]

Lady Kale uses some unique evil magic items that are powered by her Dark Stone. In "Home Sweet Heart Stone", she plays her magic bagpipes to lure Kit (and accidentally a whole host of other magic animals) over to her. She later turns the instrument into a set of huge, Grimm the dragon-powered pipe organs to use in a musical battle against the Jewel Riders, creating a small wild magic storm.

Kale also owns a magic spinning wheel in "Fashion Fever" that she smuggles into the Crystal Palace to have her dweasels create an enchanted dress to bewitch Princess Gwenevere once she puts it on, having her in a trance to obey Kale and causing a great deal of chaos. The princess even attacks her own friends on Kale's order until the evil enchantment is broken by Fallon. The wheel, with a face, looks "almost alive."[3] It later places Master Antonio under its mad spell when he discovers it, which eventually results in it being literally blown away together with Kale in the fireworks tent explosion after the wheel knocks her into it.

The Horn of Merlin[]

Horn of Merlin

The Horn of Merlin is a magic device that the Jewel Riders can use to summon The Pack – wherever they are – and bring them to their aid after the girls combine their Enchanted Jewels. The lights from the three stones create a large magic French horn that then disappears as the boys appear on their wolves. It is only seen used in "Travel Trees Can't Dance" to help fight Kale and the wild magic outbreak in the Northwoods, when Tamara invokes: “From legends of old, we call upon the Horn of Merlin! Wise wolves whose memories run long, hear our song, come to us who need you!
